University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music First Friday Tours

The University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music will open its doors to prospective students on Friday, April 5, 2024, for them to visit the music department and learn more about its offerings, and to meet professors and faculty.

“Our First Friday events are designed to give students who are looking at pursuing a degree and music the opportunity to come to the School of Music, meet professors, and faculty members, walk around the facilities, maybe sit in on a rehearsal or class. They can also get a more in-depth feel about what it would be like to study here,” said Kristen Russell, Marketing Committee Communication Officer for the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music.

The First Friday events are paired with the regular The University of Memphis campus tours. Students may tour the campus before or after visiting attending the First Friday tour of the School of Music. Students will be able get their questions answered about scholarships and applying for financial aid, as well as seeing a bit of campus life. Lunch will also be provided.

“We try to make sure that if they are a tuba student, we would connect them with our tuba faculty. That way, they’re getting to meet the people they would be studying with,” said Russell.

The new Scheidt School of Music building opened on February 4, 2023. Russell noted the building doubles in size the performance space and is triple the capacity of the previous building with a 900-seat performance hall.

“We have modern technology, state of the art recording studios . . . there are a lot of things we are able to do now having updated facilities and bigger spaces,” said Russell. “Offerings are going to be at a larger set scale this spring.”

The School of Music offers majors and has programs in composition, commercial music, conducting, jazz studies, music business, music education, music history, and pedagogy, as well as offers recording technology and vocology certificate for performance.
